8/28/06 12:25 am - [episode #300] 50,000 SNR fans can't be wrong

Tonight (Monday August 28th 2006):

update: SEX NEGATIVES AT 11PM!!

Another installment of solo soundart noisescapes. An all out insane. A single room (the backup studio B for those counting at home) brought to the limits of its abilities. A single attack->envelope->decay over 2 hours, in the distance that is not respite but a sound mirage. Your ears will learn new frequencies.

The Background: Studio A will (apparently) be shut down for renovations starting the morning of Monday August 28. This coincides with the meaningless but still important (it's a round number) 300th episode of The Signal to Noise Ratio, on air since Tuesday November 22nd 2000. Imagine such impeccable timing at CJSF. In the coming weeks live noise that would have otherwise been heard on this arbitrarily special night will indeed make it over the airwaves, once the new studio is ready for testing.

The Guarantee(c): after this illustrious episode, CJSF will not be able to broadcast live programming until Studio A is running again. The weakest node has been exposed and will be compromised. Take that, This is What You Want!!

8/7/06 09:35 pm - [episode #297] "master the power of self-suggestion"

Tonight (Monday August 07th 2006):

Hey there we have some material from Arbor CDR, frosty drones out of LA by Robedoor and some disgusting mold and mildew growing on the Beatles White Album with The Skaters ltd CDR "white rye bread". Smells/looks/plays kind of like that very same Beatles record in yr dad's moist basement. Recent news out of the Pogus empire: some compilation works from the Montreal Sound Matter exhibit, and some blistering tape machination from the 1990's provided by Reynols co-conspirator Anla Courtis. Gentle drones provided by The Moglass off their new record "sparrow juice" also.

EDIT: no time for the MSM disc.

3/21/06 01:39 pm - fire at Tarantula Hill, home of Nautical Almanac/Carly Ptak/Twig Harper

I am not ashamed to be an unabashed fanboy of these two kids. Their house in Baltimore caught fire on Friday while they were at No Fun Fest, and most of it (including innumerable cool homemade electronicx) sounds like its either smoke-damaged or completely written off. They had no insurance, and from stories Id heard in the past from various people, including Twig himself, the house was floor to ceiling equipment and other materials that were integral to the Heresee empire. I sadly never got to step foot in the space (damn that last trip to DC/Richmond VA), but people in the area say it will be sorely missed as a source for cool cheap noise shows. It was a pit stop for many artists. The Kooltronica maillist always held at least one (or more) awesome sounding shows happening there every month. This is a huge bummer.

It couldn't have happened to better, more inspiring, or more accomodating people. Amongst other things, their three cats (one pictured here) perished of smoke inhalation.

This news is fresh. If you feel the urge to send them love, hello@heresee.com is their Paypal account.

My condolences to Twig and Carly. Hopefully this turns out to be only a minor setback.

The backstory. )
